A fine 1857 entire from Gibraltar to Cadiz. Spain via San Roque. Franked by a Spanish 4 cuartos stamp and cancelled a San Roque CDS dated 8th December and with Cadiz receiving CDS dated 9th December. N.B. between 1856 and 1875 the Spanish authorities insisted on all letters from Gibraltar to Spain being prepaid at the Spanish rate – 4 cuartos – by Spanish stamps. These were actually stocked by the Gibraltar PO for this purpose. The absence of any Gibraltar marks here suggests that it may have been carried to San Roque and posted there – which was common practise.
