A fine used 1841 1d Red plate 156 lettered LF, near four margins, tied light Swaffham numeral to envelope, superb yellow backstamp of 12 March 1853. Used to Private Henry Laughton of the 12th Royal Lancers in King Williams Town (in British Kaffraria as it was known at the time) in the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa. Sadly Mr Laughton had already died on the 9th March according to the red manuscript, endorsed also ‘Dead’ in red, on reverse fine red SENT BACK TO ENGLAND WITHOUT A REASON FOR NON DELIVERY (! He was dead !), A fine and rare usage of the 1841 1d red.
